Some Arabic food contains a combination of
food groups. Falafel and hummus both consist of meat and fat. Kibbeh contains
meat, grain, and fat. Tabouli is rich in vegetable, grains, and fat. Baba
Ghannouj consists of vegetables and fat.
Stuffed Grape Leaves has meat,
grains, and fat. My favorite Shawarma consists of meat, grain, fat, and even
some fruit if you count the added tomatoes. Do not be surprised contrary to
common belief a tomato is considered to be a fruit and not a
vegetable.
How do I determine what a serving is: As you can see from the list
above, the serving size is given as a range. For example, for grains it can
be anywhere between 6-10 servings. The number of servings per food group
depends on your age, your gender, your size, and your fitness. Adults who are
relatively inactive should only consume about 1,600 calories per day, active
adults and teenage girls can consume up to 2,200 calories, and active men and
teenage boys can consume up to 2,800 calories per day. A simple way to
determine the amount of serving is of each food group is to close your fist
and that should count as one serving.
